Newly Discovered Hormone May Bring Hope For Diabetics

Researchers may have found an alternative treatment for people who suffer from diabetes. A new hormone has been discovered that creates the cells that diabetes destroys. The new hormone, named betatrophin, aids the growth of the beta cells that produce insulin, located in the pancreas. The head researcher, Dr. Douglas Melton said, “it is rare to find a new hormone, especially one so specific, I’ve never seen any treatment that causes such an enormous leap in beta cell replication.” The newly discovered hormone has the potential to help individuals with type 2 diabetes produce more insulin and help regulate the disease.
