Act Now to Help Prevent LGBT Older Adults From Aging Back Into the Closet

Act Now to Help Prevent LGBT Older Adults From Aging Back Into the Closet

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults are pioneers who bravely pushed open the doors to coming out. It is unconscionable that many of these leaders of social justice are forced to retreat into the closet as they age. The troubling reality is that the U.S. lacks a complete understanding of the LGBT senior community and is particularly unprepared for the needs of LGBT older adults at the intersection of multiple disadvantaged populations, such as LGBT seniors who are people of color, disabled, living with HIV/AIDS, undocumented immigrants or socioeconomically marginalized. A Survey of LGBT Americans

A Survey of LGBT Americans

An overwhelming share of America’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults (92%) say society has become more accepting of them in the past decade and an equal number expect it to grow even more accepting in the decade ahead. They attribute the changes to a variety of factors, from people knowing and interacting with someone who is LGBT, to advocacy on their behalf by high-profile public figures, to LGBT adults raising families.1 Read more »

Over 135 LGBT Groups Take the Full Equality Pledge Demanding a National One-Bill Strategy

Over 135 LGBT organizations from 35 states have joined in taking the Pledge for Full LGBT Equality calling upon the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus to file a national bill for full LGBT equality immediately, and to fight for its passage by 2014, the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The idea is simple: to combine all our separate legislative initiatives and community groups into one mass appeal for justice, big enough to manifest our dream of full equality in America and proud enough to reclaim our dignity. LGBT Americans Feel Growing Acceptance, Lingering Discrimination, Survey Finds

The vast majority of LGBT Americans feel that society has become more accepting of them in the last decade, yet many still feel stigmatized, according to a survey released Thursday from the non-partisan Pew Research Center.

In the survey, conducted online among 1,197 self-identified gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults, 92 percent of respondents said they feel society has become more accepting in the past decade, and the same percent said society will be more accepting in another 10 years. Read more »

It’s time for LGBT people to lead in business

It’s time for LGBT people to lead in business

A new network group for top LGBT executives is launching today, aimed at getting more gay and trans people to the head of the boardroom table, it’s boss, Suki Sandhu explains more

Two questions troubled me recently: Why are there no openly gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender executives leading any of the FTSE 100 companies? And secondly, when I attend many of the otherwise excellent existing LGBT business networks do I never see people at senior executive level?

These questions suggested to me something needs to change. That is why I set up OUTstanding In Business, a new network for LGBT executives in the UK. Read more »

More wines coming out in support of gay marriage

More wines coming out in support of gay marriage

Wineries are coming out loud and proud in their support of gay marriage. They're putting it right on the label.

"Little by little, we're breaking down the barrier," says Gary Saperstein of Out in the Vineyard, an events and tour company based in Sonoma wine country that caters to gay travelers.

One of the barrier breakers is Same Sex Meritage, a red blend that sends its message on the bottle and at the cash register: One dollar for every bottle sold is donated to the advocacy group Freedom to Marry. Read more »

LGBT Mobile Owners Actively Use Devices For Shopping, Travel

LGBT Mobile Owners Actively Use Devices For Shopping, Travel

Many LGBT mobile owners put their devices to use for travel and shopping, reveals a new study from Digitas. Comparing the shopping activities of gay men and lesbians, the study reveals that much like the population at-large, men are more likely than women to engage in a variety of mobile shopping activities, with gay men more likely to: use mobile scanners while shopping (39% vs. 32%); use shopping applications (38% vs. 28%); and buy items on their mobile devices (32% vs. 29%). The study also finds that roughly one-quarter of respondents have purchased a hotel stay (25%) or flight (23%) from their device in the past 3 months.

More than one-quarter also claim to have planned a flight (30%) or hotel stay (26%) from their mobile device in the past 30 days. Read more »
