Boy Scouts of America Statement (on equality for young gay members)

The Boy Scouts of America Statement:

"For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been a part of the fabric of this nation, with a focus on working together to deliver the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training.

"Based on growing input from within the Scouting family, the BSA leadership chose to conduct an additional review of the organization's long-standing membership policy and its impact on Scouting's mission. This review created an outpouring of feedback from the Scouting family and the American public, from both those who agree with the current policy and those who support a change. Read more »

Boy Scouts of America proposes dropping gay ban for youth members but retaining it for gay adult leaders

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is proposing to lift the ban on gay youth members but continue to exclude gay adults as leaders.

The Associated Press reports BSA announced on Friday that it would submit the controversial compromise to around 1,400 voting members of its National Council at a meeting in Texas next month.

Earlier, the BSA had indicated it might give local scout units the option of admitting both gay youth members and gay adult leaders, or continuing to exclude them.

The BSA said on Friday it had changed course after receiving the results of surveys sent out this year to members of America’s scouting community.

Gay rights groups have demanded a complete lifting of the ban. Read more »

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Says Scouts Should Keep Ban On Gays

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Says Scouts Should Keep Ban On Gays

Texas Gov. Rick Perry wants the Boy Scouts of America to maintain its strict anti-gay policy and made that clear today when he addressed the Texas Scouts' 64th annual Report to State, where (as explained by The Associated Press) hundreds of Scouts from around Texas filled the state House of Representatives to announce their delegation's recent accomplishments.

He argues that the group should hold onto its "traditional conservative values" rather than "bending to the whims of popular culture."

Cute.

More after the jump.

Boy Scouts' Repeal Of Gay Ban Mirrors Its Approach To Racial Integration

Boy Scouts' Repeal Of Gay Ban Mirrors Its Approach To Racial Integration

As Boy Scouts of America mull over whether to allow gay members to openly join, their approach might mirror the leave-it-to-the-locals tack the organization once took in deciding how to tackle the issue of desegregating its Scout troops.

"The Boy Scouts would not, under any circumstances, dictate a position to units, members, or parents," Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America, said yesterday. "This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation, and the chartered organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with each organization's mission, principles, or religious beliefs." Arizona Boy Scouts unlikely to allow gay members even if national policy should change

If the Boy Scouts revoke a longstanding national policy barring gays from membership or leadership, it is not likely to have a major effect in Arizona because the majority of local units are backed by church groups opposing gay rights, leaders said Tuesday.

The organization, with about 2.7 million youth members and 1 million adult leaders, announced Monday that it was reconsidering its policy after years of protests that have led to declining support.

A new policy would leave membership decisions in the hands of the organizations that sponsor Cub and Boy Scout troops and other more advanced forms of Scouting. Read more »

Boy Scouts Expected to Lift Ban on Gay Scouts–What Took So Long?

Corporate pressure from companies such as Ernst & Young, AT&T and Merck & Co. certainly contributed to the Boy Scouts of America’s apparent decision to end its ban on gay scouts and troop leaders, with a formal announcement expected as early as next week. The new policy would leave membership decisions up to the Boy Scouts’ 290 local councils and 116,000 sponsors, which are comprised of religious and civic groups. Read more »

Boy Scouts Board Will Consider Lifting National Anti-Gay Ban Next Week

Boy Scouts Board Will Consider Lifting National Anti-Gay Ban Next Week

Days after forcing a Cub Scout pack to drop a non-discrimination policy that included sexual orientation — and just six months after a full-throated reaffirmation of the policy — the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) board is apparently considering dropping its nationwide policy of discrimination.

Deron Smith, national spokesman for the BSA told ThinkProgress that the national board will make any decision, “at the appropriate time,” but confirmed that they “anticipate discussion on the matter at the National Executive Board at the next regularly scheduled board meeting the week of Feb. 4.” The board’s meetings are not open to the public or press. Boy Scouts Pack Drops Gay-Inclusive Non-Discrimination Pledge After Threats

Boy Scouts Pack Drops Gay-Inclusive Non-Discrimination Pledge After Threats

A Maryland-based Boy Scout pack has backed down on its non-discriminatory pledge toward gay participants after pressure from its regional council.

As Mother Jones reported, Pack 422 of Cloverly, Md. had "anonymously voted and overwhelmingly approved" to adopt a non-discrimination statement, which declared that the group would not discriminate "against any individual or family based on race, religion, national origin or sexual orientation."

By Jan. 26, however, Pack 422 officials posted the following message on the group's website: Read more »

Republican PA State Rep. Mike Fleck: I’m Gay

Republican PA State Rep. Mike Fleck: I’m Gay

State Rep. Mike Fleck (R-Huntingdon) publicly acknowledged Saturday that he is gay, making him the only* currently sitting openly gay Republican state legislator in the entire country.

In a deeply personal story by the Huntingdon Daily News (subscription), Fleck, a devout Christian, explained the difficult road to his announcement.

“Coming out is hard enough, but doing it in the public eye is definitely something I never anticipated,” he said. “I’m still the exact same person and I’m still a Republican and, most importantly, I’m still a person of faith trying to live life as a servant of God and the public. The only difference now is that I will also be doing so as honestly as I know how.” Read more »
