Over 135 LGBT Groups Take the Full Equality Pledge Demanding a National One-Bill Strategy

Over 135 LGBT organizations from 35 states have joined in taking the Pledge for Full LGBT Equality calling upon the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus to file a national bill for full LGBT equality immediately, and to fight for its passage by 2014, the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The idea is simple: to combine all our separate legislative initiatives and community groups into one mass appeal for justice, big enough to manifest our dream of full equality in America and proud enough to reclaim our dignity. Gay politicians go mainstream

The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund announced its endorsement of New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for mayor Thursday, which the blog Gay Politics reports would make New York the world’s largest municipality ever to be led by an openly gay mayor if she is elected.

The Victory Fund has also endorsed openly LGBT candidates for 2013 mayoral races in a range of cities including Seattle, Minneapolis, and Houston.

Whether or not any of these candidates are elected (or re-elected as in Houston Mayor Annise Parker’s case), by political standards the pace of change surrounding public acceptance of openly gay candidates (not to mention gay marriage) is extraordinary. Read more »

Victor Garber confirms he is gay

Victor Garber has confirmed he is gay.

The 'Argo' actor has never publicly addressed his sexuality, but said he is planning to attend the screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards later this month with long-term partner Rainer Andreesen.

Asked about an entry on his Wikipedia page - which is not official and open to editing by users - that says he lives in New York City with the artist-and-model, the 63-year-old actor told blog Greg in Hollywood: ''I don't really talk about it but everybody knows. He's going to be out here with me for the SAG Awards.'' Read more »

“Out at The New York Times: Gays, Lesbians, AIDS and Homophobia Inside America’s Newspaper of Record” is an article I wrote for The Advocate 20 years ago which began as an interview with a man who chose to speak out. The New York Times assistant national editor Jeff Schmalz bravely decided to tell me about being gay and about living with AIDS, recounting a dramatic health event that occurred in the newsroom, which led to the revelation that he was gay and appeared to contribute to setting the paper of record on a new course on gay rights. Complaint: NY wedding site banned same-sex couple

ALBANY, N.Y. — Two upstate New York women turned away from a potential wedding site because they are gay have filed a discrimination complaint, setting up a possible precedent-setting fight involving the state's new same-sex marriage law.

The complaint with the state Division of Human Rights appears to be a first involving a wedding venue since same-sex marriage became legal in New York in July 2011, according to advocates on both sides of the issue. One prominent gay marriage opponent said the case could test the breadth of the law's religious freedom language. Read more »

DOMA Ruled Unconstitutional By Federal Appeals Court In New York

A divided federal appeals court in Manhattan struck down the Defense of Marriage Act Thursday as unconstitutional, joining an appeals court in Boston in rejecting the law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court is expected to take up the case in the next year.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued its 2-to-1 ruling only weeks after hearing arguments on a lower court judge's findings that the 1996 law was unconstitutional. Read more »

2nd Circuit Hears Gay Widow Edith Schlain Windsor's Argument Against Unfair Tax

MANHATTAN (CN) - An Obama administration lawyer urged the 2nd Circuit to ensure that an 83-year-old lesbian widow receives the same spousal benefits as other Americans.

Edith Schlain Windsor filed a federal complaint against the government after she had to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax when her wife, Thea Spyer, succumbed to multiple sclerosis and a heart condition in 2009.

The couple had been together in New York City since 1963 and married each other in Canada and another jurisdiction where same-sex marriage is legal.      Read more »
