Gay Military Groups Merge To Carry On Fight For Equality

WASHINGTON -- A veteran advocacy organization that pioneered in pushing to repeal the military's ban on the service of openly gay soldiers is joining forces with a newer cadre of activists that began as an underground network for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender troops.

The boards of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (or SLDN), founded in 1993 to combat the "don't ask, don't tell" policy launched that year, and OutServe, an association of gay and lesbian service members who connected anonymously on Facebook, voted over the weekend to combine. The Obama Administration will no longer defend legislation in court banning same-sex couples from receiving military and veterans benefits.

Title 38 defines "spouse" in the same terms as Section 3 of DOMA: "a person of the opposite sex who is a wife or husband." Together, they deprive same-sex spouses -- both of civilians and military veterans -- of federal benefits enjoyed by married heterosexual couples.

The Washington Post A gay rights group pushing for a repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy is warning gay and lesbian service members not to participate in a Defense Department survey distributed this week to active-duty and reserve troops.
