Almost-Eagle Scout denied award because he is gay

Ryan Andresen had recently completed the requirements to earning his Eagle Scout award, including building a "tolerance wall" for victims of bullying like himself, but his Scoutmaster would not sign off on honoring him with the Boy Scouts’ highest ranking because he is gay, his mother said.

Not only will Andresen not get the award, but the Boy Scouts of America said late Thursday in a statement that because of his sexual orientation, “he is no longer eligible for membership in Scouting.” Read more »

Joel Osteen Says Being Straight Is 'Not A Choice,' But Maintains Being Gay Is A Sin (VIDEO)

Conservative televangelist Joel Osteen went on national television this morning and admitted that his own sexual orientation is not a choice -- despite maintaining consistently in previous interviews that being gay is a sin, albeit one that "God gives us the grace to change."

Osteen has repeatedly tried to tip toe around his stance on homosexuality, telling Piers Morgan in October of 2011 that he's not "mad at anybody" and doesn't "dislike anybody," while reiterating his belief that the scripture says homosexuality is a sin," and "two hundred years from now, the Scripture is still going to say that. New Brochure Says Bullying Is Bad But So Is Being Gay

Linda Harvey of the Christian group Mission: America said she wants kids to know that bullying is wrong. She also wants them to know that "something called gay" is wrong too.

In her new guide on how to talk to kids about homosexuality, Harvey writes, "It's not right to tell someone that being homosexual is okay. The person may be feeling sad because of being bullied, but never try to make him or [sic] feel better by saying "gay" is okay."

The guide compares being gay to overeating: Read more »

Nebraska Lesbian Mutilated in Anti-Gay Hate Crime

Nebraska cops are hunting three masked men who carved derogatory epithets into the body of an openly gay woman.

"Three men wearing masks, that's all the victim was able to provide," said Officer Katie Flood of the Lincoln Police Department.

"Derogatory terms associated with her sexual orientation were painted inside her home," the officer said. News reports state that crude words referring to her sexual orientation were carved into her body.

"We will not release what was written on her body," Flood said.

The woman, who is 33, was bound, gagged and mutilated early Sunday and the three attackers splashed the victim's home with gasoline and tried to set it on fire, scorching a floor, police reports state. Read more »

The Boy Scouts of America has reaffirmed its longtime policy of barring openly gay boys from membership and gay or lesbian adults from serving as leaders. The decision, announced on Tuesday, came after what the organization described as a wide-ranging internal review, and despite public protests.

“While a majority of our membership agrees with our policy, we fully understand that no single policy will accommodate the many diverse views among our membership or society,” said the Bob Mazzuca, the chief Scout executive, according to the statement. Read more »

D.C. Republican Committee Adopts Gay-Inclusive Platform

The D.C. Republican Committee adopted inclusive language in its platform with a vote Thursday, becoming the first GOP state party to take such a step.

The committee, which is the equivalent of a state party, made the change under the platform’s “Family and Marriage” heading, according to a news release from the D.C. chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans, which supported the move.

“We, the Republicans of the District of Columbia support the belief that all individuals, without regard to sexual orientation, are entitled to full and equal protection under the laws and the Constitution and that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect,” says the new language. Anderson Cooper: "The Fact Is, I'm Gay."

Anderson Cooper: "The Fact Is, I'm Gay."

Last week, Entertainment Weekly ran a story on an emerging trend: gay people in public life who come out in a much more restrained and matter-of-fact way than in the past. In many ways, it's a great development: we're evolved enough not to be gob-smacked when we find out someone's gay. But it does matter nonetheless, it seems to me, that this is on the record. We still have pastors calling for the death of gay people, bullying incidents and suicides among gay kids, and one major political party dedicated to ending the basic civil right to marry the person you love. So these "non-events" are still also events of a kind; and they matter. The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality. Read more »
